Project Blogger : special guest Stan Lee from Brand DNA

“Your blog is your unedited version of yourself.” – Lorelle

Yep, I have the pleasure of talking to non other than Stan Lee – one of Australia’s great creative minds and the face behind the popular blog Brand DNA.

I just may have found Stan Lee’s blogging DNA…

Mel: What gave you the inspiration to set up your blog?

Stan: I had taken a sabbatical from the advertising industry and was invited to lecture in the advertising degree at RMIT University. One of the things I wanted to do was get students more clued up on the world of digital. To do this, I intended to get the kids to set up their own blogs. So I set up one of my own to so I could share my learnings with the kids.

M: What does Brand DNA mean to you?

S: My blog is, essentially, a light hearted look at the weird and wonderful world of brands, advertising and the broader communications industry.

M: Are there certain stories or categories you know will get a great reaction?

S: Every now and again I like to vent a little on the blog, about issues affecting the advertising industry, the quality of creative work etc. these pieces are designed to ignite conversation.

M: What are your top tips for other bloggers?

S: Anyone can start a blog. It’s easy and free. Keeping it going however requires commitment. Not just to your blog, but the audience that you build over time.

M: What is your top tip for someone just starting out?

S: There are zillions of blogs out there. If you’re gonna start one, try and do something new or different. Try and put your personality into it too.

M: What are some of your favourite blogs?

S: Obviously advertising and design blogs are the ones I visit most. My faves are:

Dave Trott – cstadvertising.com/blog

Adscam – adscam.typepad.com

Only Dead Fish – neilperkin.typepad.com/only_dead_fish

I also have a soft spot for music related blogs:

Exile on Moan Street – exileonmoanstreet.blogspot.com

And another thing – whatsheonaboutnow.blogspot.com

M: How is blogging a creative outlet for you?

S: I am a writer, so yes I guess the blog is an opportunity to craft a few pithy sentences on a regular basis. However doing the blog has also influenced my thinking at work. So it’s not just a creative outlet, it is also a source of inspiration for me.

M: Has blogging opened up doors for you with new contacts and conversations you may never have otherwise had?

S: I’ve built a huge collection of contacts and friends around the world from doing the blog. I’d say that setting up Brand DNA was one of the best ideas I’ve had in the last five years.

M: What’s the thing you like most about your blog?

S: That a fresh post appears every week day. That the info is delivered in bite sized chunks. And that each and every day, somewhere in the world, I put a smile on somebody’s face.

Thanks Stan xx
